The History of the Side Car
In the early part of the 20th Century, long before family values became a slogan, motorcyclists attached sidecars to cycles so that they could take family and friends with them on their adventures. A motorcycle sidecar is a comfortable, convenient recreation vehicle for your journey – whether that's an extended vacation, leisurely afternoon drive or quick trip to the grocery store. But be prepared – you'll grab the attention of those you pass!
If you've never driven a motorcycle with a sidecar (otherwise known as a 'hack' or an 'outfit'), you're in for a major surprise the first time out! Since the sidecar's wheel usually isn't powered, the entire bike lists to the right when accelerating and to the left while braking. Thankfully, it doesn't take long to get used to the odd motions and sensations, and by the end of your second day behind the bars, you'll be completely at ease with the see-sawing, eventually using it to your advantage around the streets of your city.
Many of the folks who buy sidecars just want to keep riding and with a sidecar they don't have to worry about balance, they don't have to put their feet down and hold up an 800-pound machine and they can carry more stuff. There have been advertisements making references to the sidecar as "the world's largest purse for women." (Or men who carry purses.) And then there are the folks who just want to give their dogs a ride!
If you think there's a sidecar in your future we say..."Go for it!" it just may extend your riding days and with a friend along those days will be even more fun!
